How are you deciding to vote? What values are you using to make your decision? What party they represent? What sex they are? The promises they are making? How they speak? Your over impression of them as a person?
If you’re a Christian, have you considered what the Bible says? What do you think is the the clearest passage of Scripture on the subject of what government is supposed to do? There are several, I just point out one of the clearest.
Since Paul sent his best protege, Timothy, to protect one of the premier churches of the first century, Ephesus, from false teaching Paul clearly laid out the way every church should conduct itself. He began with this:
First of all, then, I urge that entreaties and prayers, petitions and thanksgivings, be made on behalf of all men, for kings and all who are in authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity. This is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.” (1 Timothy 2:1–4 NASB95)
Note: The FIRST instruction is to pray intensely, a fact emphasized with a list of 4 similar words so nothing can be misunderstood on the grounds of semantics.”
The first thing churches are instructed to pray is for people everywhere starting with those in civil authority because they rule over entire populations. You and I are commanded to ask that they will act in a way that makes living out a quiet and Godly life possible.
The reason we are to pray for civil tranquility is so the message of God’s salvation from eternal wrath can be told and people have a chance to consider it. War, economic hardship, lawlessness and riots make that very hard.
What do you think is necessary for the United States or any society to live in tranquility? Let me suggest a two things:
First that we can live with a minimum of fear from having our homes invaded and relative freedom from robbery and assault. We don’t have to be mugged to be robbed. It can happen when people break agreements and formal contracts. So this point includes relatively unbiased and effective police and judicial systems.
Second a relatively stable economic system. We don’t have to be rich, but we need ways to be employed and laws that will enforce smooth flow of goods. Excessive use of government hand-outs whether to businesses or people in crisis will destroy the economic stability.
What kind of people do you think would promote these values?
If that doesn’t clarify your vote then consider which candidate’s leadership would implement the most important Godly values. Notice I did not say which candidate has the most Godly character, but which would be effective in promoting effective moral standards within the operations of the government.
Let’s pray that God will put into office a candidate that will lead us to a peaceful life. However I have to add that peace in this nation may not be possible since it may be too late to change the tide of Godlessness in this culture. In that case we need to pray for strength to endure during the trials that will come upon Christians.
