This is the first painting that ever stunned me. At over 12 x 8 feet, it is so large that no print or web image can do it justice. As I sat looking at it in the United States National Gallery of Art, I became alarmed, because it was as if more lions were appearing out of it’s darkness. Then as I gazed, I saw more and more detail in their life-like expressions and posture. Then I pondered the clarity of faith that Daniel was expressing among such danger. Rubens really puts you into that den. He communicated through centuries that he understood what Daniel was experiencing and brought that confidence in God into the present to encourage the saints to persevere and trust God with peace.
